"Bat Masterson"-2 Episodes: "The Fighter" - "Stampede At Tent City" Gene Barry starred as Bat Masterson, dapper ex-lawman who roamed the West. Masterson's gimmick was a goldtipped cane that diguised a sword; he also carried a gun; of course. In real life William Bartley Masterson has been a deputy of Wyatt Earp. Notable guest stars included Dyan Cannon (in her first prime-time appearance, "Lady Luck," November 5, 1959) classic tv westerns and William Conrad ("Stampede At Tent City," October 29, 1958, his first TV dramatic appearance). Gene Barry returned to TV as Bat Masterson in an episode of Paradise in 1989. (October 1958-September 1961) The Rifleman-2 Episodes: "Outlaws Inheritance" - "Mail Order Groom" "The Rifleman" was the saga of Lucas McCain, a homesteader in the Old West struggling to make a living off his ranch classic tv westerns and make a man out of his motherless son, Mark. Chuck Connors, a former professional baseball player, won critical acclaim for his portrayal of Lucas, classic tv westerns and young Johnny Crawford was also started on a successful career in this series. The setting was the town of North Fork, New Mexico, whose marshal seemed incapable of handling any of the numerous desperadoes who infested the series (as they did all Western series) without the help of Lucas, Helpful, too, was the trick rifle that Lucas always carried, a modified Winchester with a large ring which cocked it as he drew. Supposedly, he could fire off his first round in three-tenths of a second, which certainly helped in a showdown. (September 1958-July 1963) Death Valley Days-2 Episodes: "Dear Teacher" - "Sego Lillies" This long-running series began on radio in 1930; it was one of television's few western anthology series. Approximately twenty new episodes were filmed each year; several were filmed on location at "Death Valley." The series was hosted by Stanley Andrews from 1952 to 1965 (as the Old Ranger). Ronald Reagan succeeded him classic tv westerns and when Reagan left for politics in 1966, he was replaced by Robert Taylor.
